I am a creator. I was born to create!
Sharae Rogers of Lola Rae Studios
Sharae Rogers is based in Dallas, Texas and will be gracing the FashNet 2017 Runway with her designs.
How long have you been active in your nominated field?
I graduated in 2014 from UNT with my BFA in Fashion Design but I have been in love with fashion and design since I was a young girl. At the age of 8 I started doodling gowns and dresses and jewelry and before I knew it, I was sneaking into my mom's sewing kit to try to bring my doodles to life! By the time I reached high school I had a clear definition of style and I utilized it every day. Always wearing a new outfit that I put together using the hand-me-downs from my sister and sheer creativity to create something new out of something old. I went on to create my high schools first ever Fashion Club with my best friend, I am told by my younger sister that it is still a thriving club on campus to this day 🙂 I also won my senior classes Best Dressed Award, not too bad for a girl who built her personal collection using unwanted & used clothes. This taught me that I had the ability to create something from nothing and it's a skill that I am so grateful for.
How would you describe yourself as fashion artist in relation to your nominated field, creativity or talent?
I am a creator. I was born to create. Whether it's in the kitchen, at my sewing machine, painting, building furniture, making jewelry; I create daily. Designer and artist were once the titles that I yearned to be able to live up to. But as I've progressed through my life and my career, I now understand that creativity is the soul of humanity. So now I wear who I am proudly, I am a creator.
Have you ever participated in a fashion Runway Show before?
Yes, while in college I was in the ArtWear senior fashion show both my senior year and years prior to that. I also was a top 10 finalist in the Little Black Dress Competition in 2014 where my dress was showcased. I most recently debuted a small collection at this years Pin Show.
Have you ever been nominated for an Award before? If so which one?
In college I received the first ever MaryJo Rawlins scholarship for Fashion Design. I also won best sportswear collection and best accessory design at my senior ArtWear show and as you know, I won best dressed in high school 🙂
What inspires and motivates you?
Women and the divine strength and power that we all carry inside of us is what inspires and motivates me. I grew up surrounded by strong women who did what they had to, they never gave up and always kept going. They showed me that I can have what I want in this world, I can be strong and feminine. I can build something that's never been built before because of the sacrifices of the women before me made to clear my path. So, now I want to create designs that inspire, empower and motivate women to love themselves as they are, just as I was raised to. I never want to create something that is used as a cover up for the female body. My goal with my designs is to showcase and reflect the soul of the woman wearing them.
What 4 Adjectives best describe your work?
My work can be described as sassy, comfortable, romantic + bold
What makes you the best candidate for this Award?
I am the best candidate for this award because I've worked my whole life in order to be able to get to this point. A point where I create for a living. Every single day I wake-up and I create. Whether as a part-time pattern maker and designer at my job in Garland. Or as a freelance graphic and fashion sketch artist online. Or through edible creations for my small bakery company, LBD Bakery + Boutique. Or from working on my new capsule collection for LolaRae. I am a creator and I live that daily. The dreams of my childhood have come true. Now, with an award like this, I'd be able to share my dreams with more people. My creations with more people. And inspire more people, women and young girls who maybe are like me when I was a child, doodling all over every scrap of paper they can find because their creative mind can not be stilled and they need to share their gifts with the world. I give away my creativity daily and I love every second of it.
